Azaad is the worst possible launching pad for Ajay Devgan’s nephew Aman Devgan and Raveena Tandon’s daughter Rasha Thadani
Review: Film Azaad
Rating: 1/ 5
The only reason for giving this film a rating of 1/ 5 is because the horses did a great job. Otherwise, Azaad is a prime example of nepotism in the film industry, depriving talented newcomers of opportunities.
This dated period drama, set in 1920, offers nothing new. The audience has already seen countless films about village-British conflicts, and the climax is heavily inspired by Lagaan.
The acting is subpar, making this a disappointing launch for newcomers Aman Devgan (Ajay Devgan's nephew) and Rasha Thadani (Raveena Tandon's daughter). Rasha shines only in the item number, while Aman shows little promise as an actor.
Although Ajay Devgan’s cameo is extended to over an hour, it adds no real value. Mohit Malik delivers a decent performance, but Diana Penty, Piyush Mishra, and others seem lost, failing to deliver even one noteworthy scene.
Director Abhishek Kapoor, previously known for Kai Po Che and Rock On!!, disappoints yet again. His direction is lackluster, making the 2.30 hour runtime feel tedious and senseless. Abhishek has delivered several flops in his career, including his debut Aryan (2006), Fitoor, Rock On 2, Kedarnath, and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui.
The story, screenplay, and dialogue, co-written by Abhishek Kapoor and Ritesh Shah, are horrible and outdated. Over 50% of the dialogues are in English, which feels out of place and unnatural for the setting.
It's baffling that seasoned actors like Ajay Devgan and Raveena Tandon, with over 35 years in the industry, approved this weak and uninspired script.
The music, composed by Amit Trivedi, is equally disappointing—outdated and forgettable. None of the songs leave an impression.
Box Office Performance
Produced by Abhishek Kapoor and Roni Screwvala and distributed by Anil Thadani (Rasha’s father), Azaad had a poor opening, despite tickets being priced at just ₹99. Many morning shows were canceled, and the first-day collection is likely to be under ₹1 crore.
This film is bound to be a major disaster at the box office.
